When people see me now – a data analyst, a health informatics researcher, the founder of The Serene Analyst – they often assume I’ve always had a “tech” mind. However, my story began in a very different place.
This is not a tale of instant success.
It’s a story of stillness, grit, and choosing clarity over chaos – even when everything felt uncertain.
“My first job after university paid £6.50 an hour. I didn’t analyse data – I held hands and helped people dress.”
The Beginning: £6.50 an Hour, A Care Shift at a Time
My first job out of university wasn’t in a lab or an office.
It was in people’s homes.
I worked as a care assistant earning £6.50 an hour, supporting clients with dementia, mobility issues, and terminal illnesses. The work was intense – emotionally and physically – but also deeply human.
There were no dashboards.
No spreadsheets.
Just me, a uniform, and the responsibility of holding space for others in their most vulnerable moments.
And yet… something was stirring in me.
A question kept returning: What if I could still help people, but from a different angle?
One that used both my mind and my empathy?
“From home care shifts to healthcare dashboards. No mentor. No bootcamp. Just clarity, curiosity, and a quiet belief I could figure it out.”
Rediscovering My Curiosity
I studied Human Anatomy at university. I was fascinated by how the body worked, but I didn’t see a clear career path at the time.
But years later, I stumbled across a free online course in Excel. Then SQL. Then Power BI. Then statistics.
Suddenly, I found myself staying up late watching YouTube tutorials – not because I had to, but because I wanted to. I was discovering something:
Data analysis wasn’t just numbers.
It was storytelling.
It was meaning-making.
It was a way to serve people, especially in healthcare, without being in a hospital ward.
“Data analysis wasn’t just numbers. It was meaning-making. And it gave me a second chance at purpose.”
The Transition: Learning in the Quiet
I didn’t have a mentor.
I didn’t have flashy credentials or a tech network.
What I had was:
- A laptop
- Quiet early mornings and late nights
- A notebook filled with practice projects
- A vision of a calmer, more purposeful life
I began building a portfolio.
Every small win felt big. Every lesson learned became a stepping stone.
Eventually, I landed my first data-related role, and although it wasn’t perfect, it was proof that I could succeed in this field.
Now: Finding Purpose in Every Dataset
Today, I work in healthcare analytics, leveraging my background in human anatomy alongside modern data analysis tools.
I’m pursuing a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH).
I’m building toward a future as a Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO).
I’m mentoring others, helping them make their unconventional pivots.
And through The Serene Analyst, I share what I’ve learned:
- That stillness is strategy
- That you don’t need to shout to be impactful
- That there’s room in this field for analysts who lead with calm, clarity, and care
“You don’t need to code like a machine or network like a socialite.
You can lead in data as your soft-spoken, curious, brilliant self.”
